The purpose of this quantitative causal comparative study was to determine if, or to what extent, there was a difference in mindfulness-based traits (e.g. attention and emotion regulation) and flow of male collegiate athletes using a mindfulness-acceptance-commitment (MAC) intervention treatment versus psychological skills training (PST) intervention treatment using athletes from a national men's collegiate gymnastics association. The study was based on the MAC approach to enhancing human performance. Two hypotheses were proposed: (1) those who completed a short MAC intervention would demonstrate higher level of mindfulness traits than those who completed conventional PST intervention and (2) those who completed a short MAC intervention would exhibit a higher level of flow that those who completed conventional PST intervention. Participants included 72 members of a national men's collegiate gymnastics association. Mindfulness-based traits were measured via the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) self-reported questionnaire and flow was measured via the 9-item short Dispositional Flow Scale -2 (DFS-2) self-reported questionnaire. An independent t-test found no significant statistical difference between the MAC group and the PST group for mindfulness-based traits, t(70) = 0.94, p = .352, and flow, t(70) = 1.36, p = .178. More research is needed to better understand the influence of MAC as a performance intervention in comparison to PST.
