The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine how healthcare practitioners in the Midwestern United States describe the influence of their lifestyle behaviors on motivation to promote healthy lifestyles to their patients. This descriptive study on lifestyle behaviors of healthcare practitioners and their influence on health practitioner motivation to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors to their patients was shaped through the use of existing theoretical foundations. The Health Promotion Model and the theory of reasoned action and theory of planned behavior served as the theoretical foundation. The research questions in this study were: How do lifestyle behaviors of healthcare practitioners influence their motivation to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors to their patients? and How do self-reported factors influence the lifestyle behaviors of healthcare practitioners? A qualitative descriptive study was the selected methodological approach for this study. This study involved a purposive sampling of 12 non-physician healthcare practitioners, specifically nurses, respiratory therapists, allied health educators, and dietitians. Thematic analysis was used to analyze data and elucidate emerging themes such as attitudinal factors towards lifestyle behavior promotion that affect actions and behaviors, preconceived professional expectation to promote healthy lifestyles to patients, the inherent beliefs of the healthcare practitioners that stimulate lifestyle behavioral responses and societal influences that impact how health practitioners regard the vitality of lifestyle behaviors.
