The purpose of this research study was to examine the transformational leadership behaviors of athletic directors who are members of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) to learn what makes them effective. While there are many research studies on transformational leadership particularly in the business world, very few studies exist connecting transformational leadership and college athletic directors, particularly in Christian universities. Using generic qualitative inquiry (Percy et al., 2015), this study examined three central research questions: a) What are CCCU athletic directors' perceptions with regard to their transformational leadership behaviors? b) What are CCCU athletic directors' perceptions with regard to their transformational leadership tendencies? and c) What are CCCU athletic directors' experience with regard to using the transformational leadership style? Semi-structured interviews were conducted on the 11 CCCU athletic directors who rated themselves highest on transformational leadership behaviors based on the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Bass & Avolio, 1995). The study revealed eight major themes as follows: a) Being a Role Model, b) Commitment to Mission, c) Providing Focus Beyond Winning, d) Investing in Others and Helping them Succeed, e) Recognizing Individual Differences, f) Practicing Two-way Communication, g) Valuing and Cultivating Relationships, and h) Listening and Getting Input. In summary, leaders should strive to model the transformational leadership behaviors of CCCU athletic directors by creating a culture of collaboration, taking advantage of opportunities to impact others, and focusing on their greater purpose.
