In recent years, the rise of social media has contributed to a wide array of educational concerns, particularly within athletics. Although research in this area is limited, the vast majority of available literature focuses on the intercollegiate level of sport despite the fact that interscholastic athletic participation has increased significantly over the past three decades (National Federation of State High School Associations, 2019a). The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how interscholastic athletic directors design and implement social media policies for student-athletes. In order to address this gap in the literature, the researcher conducted a document analysis of athletic social media policies (n = 9) and interviewed interscholastic athletic directors (n = 13) from Texas, the state which leads the nation in total interscholastic athlete participation (National Federation of State High School Associations, 2019a). Respondents possessed an average of 9.9 years of athletic administrative experience and represented all six enrollment classifications established by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). In addition to the content analysis findings, qualitative inquiry created nine emergent themes across five research questions. This study revealed how interscholastic athletic directors address the issue of social media use among student-athletes and provides important information for academic scholars and practitioners within public education and interscholastic athletics.
