Many high school coaches have identified a coaching style that they either succeeded with as an athlete or have recognized as having worked for other teams. The general problem is that coaches do not adapt their coaching style to the team or the environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate high school athletes (N = 81) perceptions of coach effectiveness based on their perceived relationship with the coach. Using the Coaching Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ), the Revised Servant Leadership Profile for Sport (RSLP-S), and the Coach Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q), t tests were used to determine differences in perceptions based on athlete gender (male or female), sport type (team or individual), or team level (varsity or junior varsity). Results indicated significant differences exist between gender, sport type, and team level when evaluating coaching behavior, leadership characteristics, and the coach-athlete relationship. The results of this study pointed out that the typical assumptions of certain athletes and their perceptions of coach effectiveness may not necessarily be as expected. Although results varied in level of significance and coaching characteristics, the conclusion is that coaches should be cognizant of their athletes' needs and how coach behaviors and leadership styles affect the athletes' perceptions and thereby the athletes' sport experience. It is recommended that coaches be willing to alter coaching styles to meet the needs and expectations of their athletes.
