In 2013, California's educational system adopted the Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade 12 (CA NGSS). The new standards required a significant shift in what and how science is taught and learned in classrooms across California. Retraining of educators became a necessity, and related professional development opportunities were made available. Improving the selfefficacy of science educators is a critical step in increasing their confidence and competence in implementing the reformed standards and curriculum. Four factors have been identified that are related to teacher self-efficacy: access to resources, collaboration, pedagogy, and content knowledge. Considering the differences and unique needs between professionally isolated schools and those that are not, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade educators from isolated schools (primarily in rural areas) were surveyed to identify their challenges in implementing the CA NGSS. Next, two day-long workshops were created based on the identified barriers and needs, with the goal of increasing the self-efficacy of these professionally isolated middle grade science teachers. Post-test results indicated that in-person networking with other professionally isolated middle grade science teachers along with developing resource-rich pedagogical knowledge and content knowledge is very important in enhancing the self-efficacy of teachers in implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
