Alcohol is by far the principal contributor to injury and death, and the main cause of death for individuals under the age of 21. The purpose of this study is to explore the causes of underage drinking and show effective solutions to the problem. This study examines the relationship between low self-control, parental intervention, drinking peers, and underage drinking in America, using Gottfredson and Hirschi's (1990) low self-control theory. This study analyzes a filtering data set (N=5,030) from 2017 titled "Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of American Youth", retrieved from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. This study found that low self-control and drinking peers have a significant influence on underage drinking, while parental intervention significantly decreases underage drinking. Particularly, this study found moderating effects of opportunities (i.e., drinking peers) within low self-control and underage drinking. Policy implications will be discussed based on theoretical findings.
