Published research indicates that diabetes and hypertension is linked to concerns with neuropsychological functioning, including cognitive impairment, depression, and anxiety. Research demonstrates that the presence of both diabetes and hypertension is associated with numerous neurocognitive problems, with executive functioning and memory problems being documented most frequently and consistently. Previously published studies have also reported an increased risk of depression and anxiety associated with both diabetes and hypertension. Furthermore, published literature indicates that poor management of these health conditions may contribute to worsening of neuropsychological functioning and evidence benefits of engaging in health behaviors. The present study examined differences in neuropsychological functioning and health-promoting behaviors in 871 adult patients between the ages of 52 and 96 who were seen for a neuropsychological evaluation at an outpatient neuropsychological clinic in Virginia. Results revealed that patients who engaged in exercise performed significantly better on measures of global cognition, depression, and anxiety. Patients who endorsed consumption of a healthy diet obtained significantly higher scores on depression and anxiety measures. Clinical implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
