The concept of control is central to the study of psychology, as well as to occupational health and lifespan development more specifically. However, the current control literature is as diffuse as it is profuse, with a preponderance of constructs that lack theory and research to integrate them. This dissertation serves as an initial integrative investigation of the relationships between different forms of control ("actual", perceived, and enacted) and well-being over time. Using an archival, age-diverse dataset of working adults across three time points (from the Midlife in the United States study), pre-registered hypotheses were tested regarding control and well-being construct relationships, as well as variability and stability within- and between-participants and as a function of sociodemographic characteristics (gender, socioeconomic status). Variables included in the study involved demographics in addition to "actual" control (aspects of job control, coded based upon participants' objective job characteristics), enacted control (forms of primary and secondary control), perceived control (job decision authority, perceived constraints and mastery), and various forms of well-being (depression, health, life satisfaction, psychological well-being). Hypotheses were partially supported, evidenced by the results of linear mixed-effects models. These findings will be instrumental for synthesizing the control literature in a lifespan- and work-relevant manner, and for building a better understanding of the interplay between control and well-being for working adults over time.
