The aim of the research was to explore the perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of complementary and alternative medicine from health practitioners and complementary alternative medicine users related to the risks, benefits, and quality of life in using alternative therapies and the perceived efficacy of these therapies for symptoms related to cardiovascular diseases. The perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs relating to the risks and benefits of using complementary alternative medicine therapies for the treatment of symptoms for cardiovascular diseases were explored using a mixed-methods convergence model design. The theoretical framework used for the study was the theory of planned behavior, grounded on predicted behavioral intention as a proxy of actual behavior. The study populations included health practitioners and users residing in the El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, New Mexico catchment areas. Triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data from two sample groups provided measures for the comparison of findings. The concurrent triangulation mixed-method approach facilitated simultaneous data interpretation between qualitative and quantitative data, to be of equal importance in the overall analysis. Three central qualitative emergent themes revealed positive perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs toward the benefits and Quality of Life in using complementary alternative medicine therapies. However, only half of the quantitative sample group perceived complementary alternative medicine therapies as efficacious to improve cardiovascular disease symptoms. Based on the findings, a salient recommendation is the development of complementary alternative medicine educational material, for different chronic health conditions and complementary alternative medicine cultural-competent education for conventional healthcare providers.
