The phenomenological qualitative study investigated the lived experiences of Black women employees wanting to advance to mid-level healthcare leadership positions in the workplace. The literature review about the phenomenon examined revealed limited documentation about the challenges that Black women faced in the workplace, as well as the strategies they used to progress professionally. The study design aided in providing a better understanding of the various barriers that limited Black women employees from advancing to mid-level healthcare leadership positions in the healthcare sector and how to mitigate those barriers to achieve progress still. The research question that guided the investigation was: What are the lived experiences of Black women who try to achieve mid-level managerial positions in the healthcare industry? The findings of the research were conclusive for the challenges that limited the professional growth of Black women employees, as well as the strategies used to advance to mid-level healthcare leadership positions. The problems identified included racism, gender bias, and white privileges. The approach used to progress professionally included building a positive self-image, making personal sacrifices, and being resilient. The researcher focused on the lived experiences of Black women employees within the healthcare management sector. Future research should consider the lived experiences of Black women employees across the healthcare industry.
