Child welfare workers often deal with burnout and fatigue. This epidemic is the leading cause of turnover in the child welfare arena. The literature addresses burnout, fatigue, and turnover; however, there exist no research or literature to date that specifically discusses the perception of job-related stress and fatigue on the familial relationships and social interactions of child welfare workers. This study was conducted to gain an understanding of the perceptions of job-related stress and fatigue on the familial relationships and social interactions of child welfare workers from Florida. There were 10 participants who had a minimum of two years' work experience, were certified in the state of Florida as child welfare workers and held a bachelor's degree or higher in a human service field. A generic qualitative inquiry approach with semi-structured interviews was used to allow the child welfare workers to describe their perceptions of job-related stress and fatigue relative to their familial relationships and social interactions. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis with coding and categorization to identify themes among participant responses. Results showed the contributing factors expressed by child welfare workers were physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Additional reported contributing factors included no social connections, feeling a disconnection with friends and family, and isolation. These factors in conjunction with an understanding of the perspectives of child welfare workers provided a concise depiction of how child welfare workers function daily and how job-related stress and fatigue are perceived to influence their familial relationships and social interactions. The findings from this study can help inform improvement of conditions in the field, such as the development of more supportive services for case managers and their families and could also change the structure and screenings of how child welfare workers are hired.
