College students involved in foster care (SIFCs) face many barriers inhibiting success in post-secondary education (Hunter et al., 2014). Increasing social support is important to help SIFCs achieve college degrees, leading to better outcomes for this population (Merdinger et al., 2005). The current study sought to understand how students involved in foster care access and utilize social support in higher education through the following research questions: How do students involved in foster care describe the systems of support that help them to progress toward graduation in higher education? How do support systems help or hinder students with reaching their academic potential? A demographic questionnaire and individual qualitative interviews were conducted with five current or graduated SIFCs to explore this phenomenon. Six themes emerged regarding descriptions of systems of support that help SIFCs to progress toward graduation in higher education including: (a) connections from foster care, (b) off-campus resources, (c) on-campus resources, (d) self-motivation, (e) significant people off campus, and (f) significant people on campus. For the second research question, five themes emerged regarding how systems of support helped SIFCs in reach their academic potential including: (a) financial, (b) off-campus resources, (c) on-campus resources, (d) self-made, and (e) significant people, and five themes emerged regarding how systems of support hindered SIFCs in reaching their academic potential including: (a) accessibility, (b) availability, (c) financial, (d) personal, and (e) relationships. These findings are helpful in determining the proper sources of support necessary for improving higher education outcomes for SIFCs.
