Stigma exacerbates the conditions of those affected by behavioral health problems, deters people from treatment, and influences some to be resigned to a lower quality of life. Despite the gravity of these ramifications, clinical psychology graduate programs provide very little education to students on stigma and they do not train students in interventions to reduce stigma. This inadvertently allows stigma and its ramifications to ensue, which not only affect people with behavioral health problems, but also clinical psychologists and their practices. Little was known about these issues. This dissertation investigated ways that clinical psychologists and their practices may be affected by and contributing to the stigma of mental illness. To address these issues, literature concerning components of stigma, the prevalence of stigma, consequences of stigma, and interventions to reduce stigma was reviewed. Overall, there was a lack of research involving clinical psychologists and stigma, and several gaps in research and practice were noticed. To address these gaps, professionals with relevant expertise were recruited for semi-structured interviews. In addition to acknowledging that stigmatizing beliefs and attitudes are prevalent among populations of mental health professionals, they explained how stigma may negatively affect mental health professionals and their practices, and how certain elements of clinical training programs may contribute to the stigmatization of people with mental illness. They also suggested ways that education, training, and research could be modified to counteract stigma and its ramifications. To disseminate the information gained from this dissertation, a condensed version of this dissertation was developed and submitted for journal publication. Ultimately, the manuscript was not accepted for publication. Nonetheless, this dissertation may provide direction for those who are interested in counteracting the stigma of mental illness and its ramifications.
