This qualitative, phenomenological dissertation study examines the experiences of lesbian women who have been in therapy with White, heterosexual, cisgender female psychologists. Historically, the idea of "being a lesbian" has been closely associated with radical feminism. Rather than resulting in a "sisterhood" of lesbian women and their heterosexual feminist allies, the connection between lesbian rights movements and the women's movement may feel threatening to heterosexual women, including psychologists, who, as products of their cultural environment, have been better positioned to take advantage of gender strategies and therefore may unconsciously have a vested interest in maintaining patriarchal paradigms: at least some power is better than no power. One objective of this study was to hear what was notable about working with someone whose own interests may be directly at odds with those of her patient and to understand how patients make meaning of their interactions with such therapists. Nine cisgender women who love women over the age of 18 years participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Participants were asked questions related to their sexual orientation, coming-out experiences, and experiences with their therapists. Themes reflected interviewees' thoughts and feelings about themselves as "queer" women, perceptions of their therapists, and experiences with regards to their therapeutic relationships.
