Studies of Du You (735-812) and his Tongdian have been usually set from a perspective of historiography. Scholars were apt to either study the life of Du You and the compilation and circulation of Tongdian, or analyze the historical ideologies of Du You in his work Tongdian, which revealed their significance in historiography. However, the intention of Du You's frequent quotation of Confucian classics and annotations has been rarely noticed, not to mention having an exclusive study on the relationship between Du You's interpretation of Confucian classics and his political ideologies, and the essence of his ideologies in classical study therefore has been hardly ever distilled. Hence, this paper attempts in the first place, through studying the reception history of Tongdian, to break through the conceptions of Tongdian as a history book and the ingrained research perspective of focusing merely on its annotations. It aims to reposition Tongdian and expose the influences and values Tongdian had posed to the discipline of classical study. Adhering to this ideology, the second chapter probes thoroughly over and organizes the content of Tongdian. By sorting out and statistically analyze Tongdian' s quotations of Confucian classics and annotations, it attempts to look into Du You's inclination and characteristics of quoting, and hence to understand his attitude towards Confucian classics. The following two chapters compare Tongdian to the notes by Zheng Xuan and Wang Su, as well as the annotations of Tang dynasty, examining the similarities and differences in between. With this, it can be expounded that, instead of being adamant in quoting notes from any particular school, Du You made own decisions on quoting notes according to specific needs of each classic, and would sometimes even amend the classics without adhering to the theories of any schools. It can be seen that Du You's interpretations of Confucian classics were based on certain principles, which were inseparable to his approaches of governing. Chapter 5 and 6 thereupon analyze at a rather micro level, examining in depth Tongdian's interpretation on ''Jiaotian Li'' ([special characters omitted], suburban sacrifice rituals) and ''Xiangyinjiu Li'' ([special characters omitted], village wine drinking ceremony). With reference to the social atmosphere and political background of mid-Tang dynasty, this paper tries to observe how Du You constructed his ideal and practical ritual system and complied with his emperor-local fraction-balanced governing approach through interpretation of classics. This paper believes that the classical study of Du You demonstrated by Tongdian, abided by the Confucian tradition of ''Tong-jing Zhi-yong'' ([special characters omitted], being versed in the classics and putting them into practise). Du You has proposed laws and regulations about solving current social problems and taking precautions, which after all, was aroused from the interpretation of Confucian classics. From this, it is clear that there has been always a subtle and interactive relationship between the original intention of classics and practical consideration of the interpreter. In-depth investigation of the interaction in between not only helps expanding the field of classical study, but also is essential to the study of Du You, Tang classics and the whole discipline of classical study.
