The intent of this study was to gain insight into the perceptions of middle school educators on cultural competence and the utilization of cultural competency strategies within the instructional setting. The study focused on educators' perceptions of how cultural competence was implemented in the instructional setting. In addition, the study focused on how educators, once exposed to this method of teaching through training, utilized this method to better serve the population of students and to what degree educators were aware of how well the use of cultural competence instruction related to students. The appropriate methodology for this study was a basic qualitative research approach. The participants for this study included 16 educators from two urban middle schools in the South Atlantic Region School System. The targeted sample included middle school educators who taught eighth-grade students and utilized cultural competency within the classroom. The three types of data collected in this study were semi-structured interviews, classroom and lesson plan observations, and demographic data. The outcomes and discoveries of this study revealed that teachers' perceptions and implementation of this method could play a significant role within the school and student learning environment if utilized with no intent of demeaning a student. However, participants found it difficult to immerse cultural competence methods within the lesson being taught. Future studies should include additional research which examines middle school educators' perception in the use of cultural competency teaching in schools not identified as Title 1 schools, educators' perception and use of cultural competence at the high school level, and the need for further in-depth cultural competence training for both in-service and preservice educators to assist with the development of instructional practices, school polices, and procedures.
