Studies show that time spent outdoors during childhood nurtures emotional connections to nature, which may lead to environmental stewardship. Nature-based programs provide a way for children to be outdoors and experience the natural world. This longitudinal, mixed methods study explored the child-nature relationship through the lens of emotional connections. Participants in the South Carolina 4-H Jr. Naturalist Program completed questionnaires that included the Affinity for Nature Scale and open-ended questions. Results showed that affinity for nature increased significantly from the retrospective pretest to posttest and that some participants had stewardship intentions in the follow-up. Participants reported feeling happy, adventurous, free, and calm in nature. Reasons for feelings were sensory experiences outside and with animals, an attraction to nature, exploration/play, and nature's calming effect. Participants reported liking program elements of hands-on and outdoor activities, animals, learning, and social time. These findings may benefit nature-based programs aspiring to connect children to nature.
