For over a decade, Bold Nebraska has been at the forefront of efforts to stop construction of the Keystone XL pipeline which would transport oil from Canada, across the Unites States' border to Steele City, Nebraska. Despite its environmental focus, the movement's rhetoric has consistently featured elements of the American West. This research delves into artifacts from the movement to ascertain the main narrative themes used to mobilize supporters, defend against opposing views, and maintain a grassroots public image. Bold Nebraska used rhetoric that included symbols and ideas associated with the American West to invoke hyper-local issues like land and water rights into larger environmental arguments against the pipeline and fossil fuels. The movements success seems to have been enhanced by continued salience of the American West and mythical frontier narratives that have been a part of the American rhetorical landscape for over 150 years.
