This master's project focused on stressors faced by first-year student-athletes in transition to higher education and collegiate level athletics. The author discussed stressors that occur amid transitions to college, paired with those faced by student-athletes as they balance athletic and academic responsibilities. Researchers indicate that student-athletes struggle when performing at high levels in athletics and academics and therefore need specific supports provided by institutions. Student-athletes are a unique sub-group, and often face biases due to their student-athlete identity, which can hinder their academic confidence and performance. Academic support for student-athletes is crucial to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and institutions are held accountable for the success of student-athletes. There are few academic supports that are creative and meet the unique needs of student-athletes at differing institutions. Therefore, this master's project proposed a unique course to be provided specifically to first-year student-athletes to aid in their initial transition to college, utilizing de Shazer's solution focused brief therapy approach (SFBT). The course focuses on goal setting and creating community among individuals working through the student and athletic experience in their first year of college.
