This qualitative study provides insight into the experiences of recent graduates of the Smith Public School district who participated in short-term study abroad programs while they were in high school. In order to effectively prepare students to live and work in a global economy, educational institutions may offer study abroad programs as a method of increasing the intercultural competence of participants. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis, this study investigated the following research question: How do recent Smith PublicSchool graduates who participated in the short-term study abroad programs offered by the district, make meaning of their international experience, both during programming and after high school graduation, in relation to their intercultural competence? Through a series of interviews, former study abroad participants recounted their experiences abroad and offered myriad examples of the deep impact that the programs had on their respect, curiosity, adaptability to change, and future goals. The results of study indicate that short-term study abroad programs at the high school level increased the intercultural competence of participants, specifically in the areas of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Skills, the three central tenets of Deardorff's (2006) Theory of Intercultural Competence. Keywords: global awareness, global citizenship, global learning outcomes, global competence, intercultural competence, study abroad, short-term study abroad, experiential learning.
