The objective of this project was to design, build, and test a plasma reactor capable of operating in the supercritical conditions. The reactor allows for the initiation DC pulsed plasma discharges in different fluids at different pressures and temperatures. The reactor was specifically designed for striking plasmas within supercritical carbon dioxide, which has a pressure of 72.9 atm and 31.1 degrees Celsius.A goal of this project was to create a semi-automated, high-pressure reactor capable of discharging plasmas in supercritical carbon dioxide. This goal was achieved, and arc discharges were created in the test cell. The tests run with the supercritical reactor, (SCR), have given valuable insight into the nature of high-pressure plasmas. Unexpected events such as, electromagnetic pulses, high current discharges, spectral line broadening, ionic wind, electrode degradation, and discharge driven shockwaves in liquid were observed. Some of these observations will help in guiding the way to design and build an improved supercritical reactor that can mitigate some of these negative or unwanted effects.
