The purpose of this study was twofold: to test daily monitoring of grip strength and response time as potential indicators of tracking physical recovery and to compare the daily monitoring of the Session Rating of Perceived Exertion (SRPE) scale to the PRS scale in high school aged athletes across a 24-hour and greater than 24-hour rest period. Eighteen (eleven male, seven female) high school athletes completing a summer strength and conditioning camp in West-Central Illinois during June and July in 2019 were included in data collection. Before each training session, each participant completed a PRS questionnaire and then was tested for grip strength and RT. After each session the participants completed a SRPE questionnaire. Each day of data collection was categorized as being after a 24-hour rest period or greater than 24-hour rest period to account for missed sessions and weekends. The Mantel-Haenszel test of trend was used to compare PRS with the previous session's PRS and Pearson's correlation was used to compare each day's PRS with grip strength and RT. The mean PRS, RT, and grip strength was also compared with 24-hour and greater than 24-hour rest periods. Alpha level was set at .05. There was a moderately negative correlation between SRPE and PRS with a 24-hour rest period (r = -0.316). Also, the mean PRS score and grip strength measurement increased with a greater than 24-hour rest period compared to a 24-hour rest period with 7% and 1.3%, respectively. In conclusion, RT and grip strength showed no significant relationship with PRS, but increased rest periods between training sessions led to higher perceived recovery and grip strength measurements. Also, SRPE and PRS show some correlation after a 24-hour rest period.
