This study examined the relationship between academic and social school readiness skills and discontinuity in the kindergarten year. Discontinuity outcome variables denote events that disrupt the kindergarten and school trajectory, specifically suspension and grade retention. Data from 13,376 kindergarten students across a large Midwestern state were analyzed to understand the relationship between school readiness skills at kindergarten entry and discontinuity. School readiness skills were measured using the Indiana Standards Tool for Alternative Reporting- Kindergarten Readiness (ISTAR-KR) and scores are reported across domains of social and academic skills. Logistical hierarchical linear modeling was used to understand the relationship between school readiness skills and the two discontinuity outcome variables, after accounting for group membership, race, socio-economic status, gender, and special education service access (presence of a documented disability). Results indicated significant relationships for all predictor variables for both suspension and grade retention, indicating that after accounting for associated demographic variables, school readiness skills were a significant predictor of suspension or grade retention in kindergarten (p<.05). Significant interactions of school readiness skills and gender and special education were discovered. Results from this study have implications for policies regarding discontinuity practices in early childhood.
