The purpose of this study was to assess changes of camp staff personal diabetes knowledge and attitudes in a diabetes camp experience. This research enrolled 35 non-medical camp staff at a residential camp hosted by the American Diabetes Association. Survey research design was used to measure personal diabetes knowledge and attitudes of camp staff at pre- and post-camp junctures. Diabetes knowledge was measured using the Revised Brief Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT2). DKT2 represented a survey of general knowledge of diabetes. The internal reliability of the DKT2 survey, as measured by Cronbach's alpha, was 0.61 (Collins et al., 2010). Diabetes attitudes were tested using the Diabetes Attitude Survey (DAS3). DAS3 included five factors representing attitudes towards: (1) need for special training to provide diabetes care; (2) seriousness of non-insulin dependent diabetes; (3) value of tight control of diabetes; (4) impact of diabetes on patients' lives; and (5) patient autonomy (Anderson, Funnell, & Grupen, 1998). Attitude questions were clustered into five topics: autonomy, blood glucose management, communication, psychosocial impact, and Type 2 Diabetes. A Post-Camp Reflection Survey gathered socio-economic and qualitative data for thematic insights about camp staff experiences. Staff completed this reflection survey two to sixteen weeks after the conclusion of camp. Open-ended questions were posed to obtain staff personal perspectives on their camp experience regarding diabetes knowledge and attitudes. IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM-SPSS), (IBM Corp., 2017) was used for data analyses, while socio-economic data and open-ended questions were compiled into emergent qualitative themes. The diabetes camp experience offers a supportive community where campers feel understood, safe, and welcomed. Opportunities occurred for staff to increase their diabetes knowledge and reflect on attitudes concerning daily diabetes management. Shared personal diabetes experiences helped camp staff feel prepared for the camp session. The diabetes camp experience provided opportunities for camp staff to empathize and connect with others. Evaluation of camp staff knowledge and attitudes toward young people living with diabetes offers important information that may assist diabetes camp directors as they recruit and support camp staff throughout the diabetes camp experience, and as those camp staff subsequently support campers.
