We emphasize the need to formulate precise, meaningful definitions of security in the context of protecting Intellectual Property contained in digital ICs. We do this by discussing four pieces of our work on the protection of such intellectual property. In the first two, we discuss a seemingly compelling approach for protecting intellectual property-IC camouflaging. We demonstrate that an adversary can carry out a demaouflaging attack, in practice, much more efficiently than previously thought. Underlying our attacks are strong foundations: an identification of the computational complexity of the problems an attacker faces in two distinct attack models, and how they can be addressed using off-the-shelf constraint solvers. We identify the lack of a precise characterization of 'security' in this context as an issue. In the third piece of work, we discuss a related IP protection mechanism called logic locking, and demonstrate that a locked IC reveals more information to an adversary than previously thought. We identify the lack of a formal definition of a certain intuitive notion of security for the mechanism here as an issue. In the last piece of work, we present three examples of the formulation of such security definitions for logic locking, each capturing a distinct, intuitive notion of security for the mechanism.
