China is one of the few countries in the world where hail occur frequently. This type of strong convective weather has a short development time and strong locality, accompanied by other weather processes such as violent winds and heavy rains. Thus, accurate forecasting of severe weather is vital to people's productivity and life. In this thesis, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model three-dimensional variational data assimilation system was used to analyze a hail event that occurred in Bayannaur, Inner Mongolia, China, on August 9, 2019. The characteristics of the occurrence and development of this hail event were analyzed based on Doppler weather radar observations. Based on an analysis of potential physics packages, the Morrison double-moment scheme was selected to simulate the event and conduct the data assimilation experiments. To test the improvement in the model forecast using Doppler weather radar data assimilation method on winds, simulated radar fields, and other aspects of the hail event, two sets of comparative experiments are applied in this paper: 1) Control experiment (CTL): model simulation of the hail event without any data assimilation; 2) Data assimilation experiment (DA): cyclic assimilation of Doppler weather radar reflectivity and radial wind data. To understand how the assimilation process and assumptions related to the observed radar echoes impacts the ability of the assimilation system to improve forecasts, three options were used for assimilating radar observations: liquid (DA_R), liquid plus ice (DA_RI), and liquid, ice and water vapor (DA_RIV), respectively. It is found that by assimilating with DA_RIV, the improvement of hail weather forecast on radar fields, rainfall and other aspects is the most obvious.
