Interactive Personal Assistants (IPA) are gaining widespread use in the market place and have the potential to enable individuals more control over their lives. This research examines the overall user experience of two differently formatted IPAs (with and without a touch screen interface) and whether or not the technology itself, at its current state, has good overall usability for adults of all ages and abilities. We conducted in-person usability tests with 59 participants with or without various physical impairments and ages with both the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot and the Google Nest Hub. Results show that the current state of the technology is well designed for many distinct populations; however, giving the user the appropriate feedback is lacking in visually impaired groups the most. The findings inform future design iterations specifically in enabling the user to be better aware of the system processes.
