This study examined the relationship between the perceived authentic leadership of principals and teacher burnout. Teachers from the La Joya Independent School District were invited to participate in the study. The teachers were asked to complete two surveys that included the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (Avolio, Gardner and Walumbwa, 2007), the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey (Maslach, Jackson and Schwab, 1987) and a demographic questionnaire. The demographic questionnaire included questions about the participant's age, gender, tenure, education level and grade level currently being taught. The Authentic Leadership Questionnaire assesses four constructs: relational transparency, internalized moral perspective, balanced processing, and self-awareness. The Maslach Burnout Inventory assesses the three dimensions of burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. While controlling for multiple variables, a multiple regression was utilized since the primary independent variables were continuous variables to determine which, if any, of my continuous variables was the strongest predictor of my dependent variable. Results showed a negative relationship between balanced processing and emotional exhaustion. In addition, the study revealed a negative relationship between internalized moral perspective and depersonalization. Furthermore, a positive relationship was found between balanced processing and personal accomplishment. Descriptive statistics such as Pearson Product-Moment Correlation were utilized to observe the correlation to determine the strength and direction of their relationships between one independent continuous variable and one dependent continuous variable. Multiple regression blocks were also utilized to first examine all of the control variables (age, gender, tenure, education level, and grade level currently teaching) and then examine the variables that I was most interested in. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.
