As with any "absolute" music, Schubert's Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 959 lacks any extramusical references or program. This study addresses the question of how one can reach an understanding of its "spiritual content and expression," to quote G.W.F. Hegel's concept of "meaning" in serious instrumental (wordless) music. The goal of this study, then, is to explore such meaning in Schubert's Piano Sonata, D. 959, vis-a-vis paintings of his contemporary Caspar David Friedrich. While previous research has established a link between the works of Schubert and Friedrich, there has yet to be an in-depth interdisciplinary analysis of the D. 959. I will apply and expand the current research with focus on performance practice of the work. In this study, I will draw upon the Wanderer archetype as the theme common to the works of both composer and painter. I will show how Schubert's compositional devices in the Piano Sonata D. 959 resonate with the pictorial devices in many of Friedrich's landscapes to evoke the plight of the wanderer. Ancillary themes to be discussed in Friedrich's paintings include nature, isolation, perplexity, timelessness, winter, and the tension between self and world. In my analysis of the sonata, I will study four compositional strategies: sudden shifts of mood and character, tonal schemes, illusory timelessness, and cyclical procedures. The purpose of this analysis is to show how the paintings of Friedrich provide useful analogies for understanding the affective qualities in Schubert's music. In this way, this study will also show how the paintings of Friedrich may serve to illuminate the world of affect in Schubert's music. This connection has been useful to many musicians and scholars and can serve as a valuable avenue to understanding Schubert's music.
