This qualitative study was conducted to investigate the impact of guided reading instruction on elementary school students' reading comprehension. Based on their reading levels and DIBELS scores, students were chosen in this study over an eight-week period. Data sources included audio recordings of guided reading instruction, professional journals that observed student questions and conversations, formal assessments, informal assessments, and student work samples to track their writing behaviors. Comparative analysis was used to analyze the data, which was compared and coded to find common themes. Findings revealed that student background knowledge affected student participation and comprehension; the use of graphic organizers supported the organization of student thoughts and comprehension; and the types of scaffolding questions asked facilitated student interactions and conversations. Suggestions of future research and recommendations for teachers and administrators are included.
