Past research has focused on understanding the role that contextual factors play in how sexual identity is managed in the workplace. This study was one of a few that examined the individual difference variables, stigma consciousness, identity centrality, and self-monitoring and their role in sexual identity management behaviors. Survey data was collected online from 191 self-identified sexual minorities. Hierarchical linear regression was used to determine whether a linear relationship existed between the individual difference variables and three specific sexual identity management strategies: counterfeiting, avoiding, and integrating. Demographic covariates and their possible relationships with these identity management strategies were also considered in the analyses. Results of the study indicated that individual differences could explain a small yet significant amount of variance in sexual identity management outcomes. Identity centrality was the strongest predictor of counterfeiting, avoiding, and integrating behaviors. Participants that placed greater importance on sexual identity in regards to their self-concept also reported more integrating behaviors whereas a negative relationship was found between identity centrality and avoiding/counterfeiting behaviors. In addition, participants reporting a greater expectation to be discriminated against because of their sexual identity were less likely to report integrating behaviors at work and more likely to report counterfeiting and avoiding behaviors. Self-monitoring did not predict participants' levels of sexual identity management behaviors and possible explanations are discussed.
