Objective: While there are many biological factors that affect one's cognitive functioning, there are also environmental factors that attribute to one's neurological stability. This study will examine the correlation between the lack of sunlight and depression. The research compiled for this study focuses on adults who work indoors approximately 40 hours a week or more, with limited or indirect exposure to natural sunlight, and live within Los Angeles County. Method: A quantitative analysis was utilized to answer the study's research questions and examine the correlation between working indoors for 40 hours or more with the adult population and depression. A simple linear regression model was conducted through IBM's SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software to reveal any correlation between the number of hours worked weekly with limited sunlight exposure and the impact on the participant's mood. To meet the physical power standard of .95, 100 completed surveys were analyzed. Results: The researchers hypothesis that adults who work indoors for 40 hours or more per week with no or limited access to direct sunlight will have a negative impact on the participant's mood is not represented in the data collected in this study, yielding a null hypothesis. Conclusions: the results of this study's hypothesis were null, revealing no evidence that there is a correlation between the lack of sunlight and depression. With limited studies conducted on this topic, specifically here in the United States, examining the lack of sunlight one experiences throughout their lifetime is definitely essential as the working class spends a great number of hours indoors. Furthering this research can potentially yield evidence of the impact of spending so many hours of one's day indoors and mood.
