This thesis investigates the question: In what way is dance helpful or detrimental for survivors of sexual assault? I look at how and why different dance forms, such as dance technique and improvisation, can be helpful in the healing process for survivors of sexual violence, including assault, rape, molestation and other forms of abuse. In addition to gathering scientific and factual information about trauma and its alleviation, I have conducted 14 interviews that form the ethnographic heart of the thesis. I believe it creates real life understanding of people who have experienced sexual assault and who have found solace with dance technique [forms that I and the dancers I talk with engage in: ballet, modern, jazz, and hip hop] and improvisation classes. After describing the aftermath of sexual assault for survivors and what the assault does to the mind, body, and spirit, I examine what dance can do as a form of treatment and healing process. While mainstream resources for sexual assault recovery are talk-based and cognitive therapies, less widely practiced modalities that engage mind and body, such as yoga, breathing practices, meditation, and tai chi have been proven to provide a means of relief and recovery. Although there is still little clinical evidence that movement can provide relief for survivors, dance, while still being a full bodied physical activity, has provided a creative and artistic way of speaking about a person's sexual trauma without forcing said person to speak about their experience in detail. Thus, I argue that dance should be considered a mind-body practice that deserves to be included in the modes of recovery.
