This thesis examines the lighting design process for dance performance. It questions the traditional lighting design approach with its long history in scripted theatre and suggests adaptations and new approaches to tailor the design process to dance and movement rather than traditional theatre. Above all, this work proposes new methods of thinking and collaborating so that the designer may more fully understand the choreographer and, thereby, more fully support the piece.
