This thesis compares the use of breath within the practice of Western modern dance and Chinese folk dance. By analyzing various styles and their different breathing patterns, I explore not only the importance of breath, but also some of the cultural and historical factors behind them. I classify the breathing pattern into four categories: slow inhale and exhale, quick inhale and exhale, slow inhale and quick exhale, and quick inhale and slow exhale. These classifications allow us to look at the breathing patterns more in depth and the adaption of different breathing patterns to different dance styles, which will create many dynamics and characteristics. By viewing breathing patterns, we can see how different cultures are expressed in dance through qualities of breath. When we know the relationships between movement and breath we can then separate them and create new combinations of breath to create new expression.Chinese dance are critical to the breathing patterns that we see in the dances. Different regions have different geographical environments, and these contribute to the unique cultural makeup and history of their arts. These various environmental features have shaped the folk dances that are produced, and helped shape the different breathing patterns in Chinese folk dance. For example, there is great variation between Tibetan, Mongolian, Uygur, Korean, Dai, and other ethnicities. Each has a different dance style, and each style has a different breathing pattern.
