James Reese Europe is among one of the first African American music entrepreneurs. Europe revolutionized music worldwide by refining American popular music and assisting with the globalization of African American music. He impacted the lives of hundreds of minority musicians by introducing professionalism and high ethical standards in the areas of instrumentation, composition, publishing, and management. Despite discrimination and racial prejudices inflicted upon him in America, he was able to create union-style organizations that uplifted the occupational status of African American musicians. As a musician that specialized in American popular music, he created a business blueprint that helped take American music to global limits. My findings reveal his methods of navigating the show business infrastructure and how they are still relevant to the current state of scholarship.
