Jonathan Edwards has proven to be one of the most influential figures in eighteenth-century Christianity and beyond. Edwards, situated in a rapidly changing society, labored to maintain his Christian heritage. He emerged as a biblical, exegetical, and philosophical theologian who exemplified solidarity and fidelity in his study of the four Gospels. Chapter One introduces Jonathan Edwards, providing both a short biography and an overview of Edwards scholarship. Upon this introduction, the thesis is stated, along with a summary of the argument. Chapter Two examines the historical foundations that underlie Edwards's interpretation of the Gospels. It considers Edwards's cultural, theological, philosophical, scientific, and biblical heritages. Chapter Three explores and defines Edwards's bibliology. After building on matters related to inspiration and reliability, specific practices within Edwards's interpretation of the Scripture are summarized. This chapter also provides a concise history of the study of Edwards's biblical interpretation.Chapter Four places Edwards's biblical interpretation in its context by assessing major figures who shaped his interpretive practices. This chapter examines the influence of eight figures: Philip Doddridge, John Glas, Matthew Henry, Moses Lowman, Thomas Manton, Matthew Poole, Henry Prideaux, and Petrus van Mastricht.Chapter Five describes the significance of one of Edwards's most prominent features in his interpretation of the Gospels: typology. His use of typology shines in both his private and public writings. Three categories are identified within his use of typology: christological, ecclesiological, and eschatological typology. Chapter Six identifies and develops theological and interpretive themes in Edwards's study of the Gospels. Edwards gave particular attention to the harmony of the Scriptures and the Gospels, to Christ, and to the kingdom of God. The chapter concludes with a case study of the Gospel of Mark, which validates these theological and interpretive themes.Chapter Seven concludes the argument of the dissertation. It highlights the contributions made to the study of Jonathan Edwards and offers opportunities for further study.
