The insertion of ὁ ἀγαπητός ("beloved") into the allusion to Ps. 2:7 in Mk. 1:11 echoes the command to sacrifice Isaac in Gen. 22:2 and evokes the wider-ranging theme of the "death and resurrection of the beloved son." When read in light of the "Davidization" and "historicization" of the Psalter, it is evident that the Davidic context of Ps. 2:7 is crucial for this evocation. It has not been sufficiently recognized that the "beloved son" theme permeates the historical narratives about David in 1-2 Samuel. This thesis will suggest that the David story has influenced the use of "beloved Son" in Mk. 1:11 via its relationship to Ps. 2:7.
