Some ancient and important witnesses to the text of Phil 3:12 attest to a reading in which Paul the apostle claims he has not yet been "justified" or "found righteous." This reading, referred to as the justification clause, has been labeled by scholars as "intriguing," "very interesting," "striking," and "astounding." However, despite such lofty descriptors, scholars have devoted little attention to the reading. This study fills this gap as the first and only full-scale study of the justification clause. It argues for the rightful place the reading deserves within the initial text of Philippians. The author analyzes the reading from documentary, transcriptional, and exegetical perspectives, concluding that it was omitted unconsciously at an early stage of textual transmission. The reading fits well within Phil 3:1-4:1 and is wholly coherent with other statements in the Pauline Epistles related to receiving a favorable verdict at the eschatological last judgment.
