The presence of exodus tradition in the Gospel of John has been recognized for a long time within biblical studies. However, there have been very few attempts to provide a thorough investigation of the exodus and its impact on the Gospel's presentation of Jesus. Moreover, there has been rising support for the use of social memory theory as a viable methodology for biblical research. Yet again, comprehensive studies of John using social memory theory have been almost non-existent. This work seeks to remedy this situation by examining how the Gospel of John cultivates and transmits memory through use of exodus tradition. In particular, this investigation utilizes the growing body of research on social memory to argue that the exodus functions as a salient landmark to which Jesus is keyed. By keying Jesus to exodus, John is able to cultivate memory of Jesus and shape the identity of early Christians.
