This study argues that First John should be read missionally, in contrast to a sectarian reading, so that the command to love one another, so prominent in the Epistle, is both inward (directed to members of the community) and outward (directed to the world). The study focuses on 1 John 4:7-21, which contains the highest number of occurrences of the verb and substantive for "love." Using Socio-Rhetorical Analysis, the repetitive character of 1 John will be examined in its progression within the Epistle and in comparison to the Fourth Gospel. The goal is to demonstrate that the dual love-command demands an understanding of the "other" that goes beyond the boundaries of one's community.
