Are there echoes of the Baptist Q oracle (BQO) [Matt 3:11; Luke 3:16] in the judgment-by-water-and-fire oracles of the Petrine judgment oracle (PJO) of 2 Peter 3:6-7? The source, form, and hermeneutic of the PJO reveal echoes of John the Baptist's baptism with fire oracle (BWFO) in the PJO's judgment-by-fire (JBF) event.First, the PJO's prophetic source reveals Peter's prophetic awareness of: (a) Joel's outpouring of the Spirit and cosmic fire prophecy as the OT prophetic basis for the BQO [Joel 3:1-5 LXX in Acts 2:17-21], (b) Jesus's figural interpretation of the BQO's BWFO in Jesus's fire oracle (JFO) on everyone will be salted with fire [Mark 9:49; cf. Luke 12:49], (c) Jesus's reformulation of the BQO to the Baptist's shorter oracle (BSO) of baptism with the Holy Spirit [Acts 1:5; Mark 1:8; John 1:33] as an accurate prediction of the Pentecost event [Joel 3:1-2 LXX in Acts 2:17-18; Acts 11:16], and (d) Joel's prophetic unfulfillment of the cosmic fire oracle [Joel 3:3-4 LXX in Acts 2:19-20] as the future BWFO [Matt 3:11; Luke 3:16] in the coming JBF event [2 Pet 3:7; cf. 1 Pet 4:18].Second, the PJO's prophetic form unveils Peter's figural interpretation of: (a) the developmental link between the OT's Noachian judgment-by-water (JBW) and Sodomic JBF oracles during the Second Temple period, (b) the unfulfilled aspect of the BQO's baptism with fire as the PJO's coming JBF, (c) the allusion to the prophetic flood-fire form of the Lucan Jesus sayings (LJS) [Luke 17:27, 29] in the PJO's water-fire judgment oracles (WFJO), and (d) the clarification of Pauline fire oracle's (PFO) salvation through fire of believers [1 Cor 3:13, 15] with the PJO's destruction by fire of the ungodly.Third, the PJO's prophetic hermeneutic unveils Peter's theological mindset as: (a) completely Jewish in stylistic composition, (b) comparatively primitive in prophetic content, (c) creative in prophetic formulation (i.e., could not be pseudepigraphal); and (d) consistent with the Petrine theology on water-fire oracles (e.g., Gospel of Mark, Petrine speeches of Acts, 1 Peter, 2 Peter).All these facts demonstrate echoes of John the Baptist in 2 Peter 3:7.
