Mental health professionals listen to stories of tragedy and loss day after day, year after year. Each client's story is unique; the therapist helps process the difficult emotions and thoughts that lead to the problems presented in therapy. Trauma therapists, as a subset of this culture, receive specialized training in trauma therapy models. The very nature of trauma therapy exposes therapists to frequent trauma stories. Even the most emotionally healthy therapist can experience their own trauma response as a result of the persistent attendance to the client's narrative. Vicarious trauma (VT) is prevalent in all of the helping professions. While not all therapists who experience VT suffer negative consequences, many do. Research shows that these negative consequences can manifest as a loss of productivity, loss of revenue for the therapists' organizations, and potential harm to the client. This study focused on the introduction of a unique art/meditation method to trauma therapists as a way to understand the experience of learning and practicing Zentangle. Future studies utilizing Zentangle as a mindfulness-based intervention may increase the understanding and knowledge of how trauma therapists internalize and externalize consistent and routine subjection to the clients' emotional pain. This generic qualitative thematic study supports existing research. The information gleaned by interviewing trauma therapists about their experience using Zentangle may provide guidance and insight for current and future therapists who struggle with the experience of trauma work and taking care of their own physical, mental, and spiritual health.
