This thesis briefly reviews the history of Chinese independent documentary film; in particular, it focuses on the documentary films that take "the bottom" of Chinese society as a prominent subject. My thesis critically examines the theme, the contents of particular subjects, the methods and the theoretical style of two featured independent documentaries--- Bumming in Beijing: the Last Dreamer (1990) and Last Train Home (2009). On that basis, it proceeds to discuss how the "bottom" of Chinese society has been represented as a "vocalized community" in independent documentaries. The thesis concludes that the independent documentary becomes a stage for filmmakers to uncover social issues within the "bottom" of China.
