The purpose of the current study was to examine the psychological (e.g., emotional distress, attachment style) and relational predictors (e.g., investment, commitment, conditions of the breakup) of social media behaviors following a dissolution of a significant romantic relationship. American millennials (N = 210), born between 1980 and 2000, who had experienced a significant breakup of a romantic relationship within the last two years completed an online survey on Facebook behaviors following the breakup (Facebook Coping Strategies, FCS) as well as information on their digital media usage (Digital Media Usage, DMU), attachment style (Experiences in Close Relationships Revised, ECR-R), psychological distress (Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire, MASQ-D30) and characteristics of their past relationship and conditions of the breakup (Relationship and Breakup Questionnaire, RBQ). The study examined predictors of a variety of Facebook behaviors including, surveillance, relational cleansing, withdrawing access, relational transgression and self-regulation. Increased emotional distressed significantly predicted surveillance behaviors. Findings also suggest that as anxious attachment increases surveillance behaviors increase as well. The study also found that emotional distress is predictive of surveillance behaviors when relationship duration is shorter (one year or less). Anxious attachment was found to be significantly positively related to relational cleansing. However, no significant relationships were found between conditions of the breakup or level of investment and surveillance, nor was emotional distress predictive of relational cleansing behaviors. Additionally, emotional distress, attachment style, characteristics of relationship while intact nor conditions of the breakups were found to significantly inform withdrawing access, relational transgression or self-regulation behavior online. Possible limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.
