Healthcare employers often criticize the lack of emotional competency and critical thinking skills demonstrated by newly licensed nurses. Spiraling healthcare costs are the result of employers expending significant financial resources and time to provide new nurses with supplemental educational programs and protracted supervision by experienced nursing staff. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether emotional intelligence (EI) improves critical thinking and emotional competence in nursing students and nurses to a degree significant enough to support including emotional intelligence in nursing curricula. Guided by Kolb and his theory of transformative, cognitive, and experiential learning, this study examined the 25 years of success that EI has had in the business world. To answer the research question of whether or not the literature would support incorporating EI into nursing curricula, a meta-analysis was conducted inclusive of other nursing abilities and traits such as leadership, health, reflection, ethical behavior, nursing student performance, and job retention/satisfaction. Studies of EI constructs, test instruments, and contrary viewpoints were also examined. In this meta-analysis 31 articles comprising 395 EI studies with approximately 65,300 participants were reviewed. All studies indicated a positive correlation with EI ranging from weak to strong with a moderate cumulative effect size of r = .3022 across all studies. By demonstrating that emotional competency, critical thinking skills, and 6 other nursing abilities and traits are improved by an EI enhanced nursing curriculum, this study contributes to positive social change by reducing an employer's time and cost for training newly licensed nurses, thereby decreasing the overall cost of health care to the public.
