The thesis explores the relevance of the L2 inner voice for the foreign language acquisition process. It specifically looks at how foreign language teachers can encourage their students' L2 inner voice development and to what extent the L2 inner voice formation might benefit students' overall foreign language ability and use. During a five-week long didactic unit, conducted with two German language classes at the University of Colorado, Boulder, various classroom activities were introduced, aimed at supporting the L2 inner voice formation. Data obtained from three questionnaires demonstrated students' opinions on the effectiveness of these activities. They also revealed to what extent participants' use of and attitude towards their L2 inner voice changed over the course of the didactic unit and to what extent students' comfort level in the production of written and spoken output changed with the help of their L2 inner voice formation.
