The purpose of this study was to investigate whether spirituality moderated the relationship between mindfulness and subjective well-being. The purpose was to determine if the strength of the relationship between mindfulness and subjective well-being would be stronger for participants who scored lower on spirituality and weaker for participants who scored higher on spirituality. Participants filled out the Toronto Mindfulness Scale, the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale, and three measures of subjective well-being: (a) the Satisfaction with Life Scale, (b) the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and (c) the Brief Index of Self-Actualization. A separate hierarchical linear regression model was run for each of the four dependent variables. Spirituality was found to moderate the relationship between mindfulness and negative affect. Specifically, the strength of the relationship between mindfulness and negative affect was weaker for participants who scored higher on spirituality than those who scored lower. However, spirituality was not found to moderate the relationship between mindfulness and the other three measures of subjective well-being: (a) positive affect, (b) satisfaction with life, and (c) self-actualization. When moderation effects were not found, main effects included positive covariance between negative affect and mindfulness. No previous studies have investigated the moderating effect of spirituality on the relationship between mindfulness and subjective well-being. Therefore, results of this study must be interpreted with caution and more research is warranted.
