During my tenure as a production student at Cal State LA within the Television, Film, and Theatre program I had the opportunity to develop, film, and produce my own content outside of the classroom. Along with some of my fellow cohorts and colleagues we were able to create a nine-episode web series entitled Displaced that spanned the entirety of my time at Cal State LA and eventually would be adapted to a proof of concept that this culminating project entails. The entire process as a whole was educational, fulfilling, and an enlightening experience both as an individual and storyteller. It also marked my first significant undertaking within the digital media realm and has in many ways become the foundation of my education. Although it was difficult at times, being able to work simultaneously on a project of my own while going to school allowed me to directly parallel my academic lessons with my experiences working on the web series and proof of concept. It also taught me some important and difficult lessons of the nuances and work ethic required to create your own content from nothing. This paper will chronicle the journey from development to production of a proof of concept for an episodic streaming series of Displaced that was adapted from the web series. I will discuss our approach to writing the script, assembling a team, managing production, raising and acquiring funds, and filming the project. I will provide insight into our experience of dealing with various challenges and our approach to mitigating conflicts. The intention is to provide insight into the process of creating your own content on a limited budget so that others may utilize our experience as a way to inform themselves when it comes to creating their own content.
